Revealing the Foundation of Our Global Networking

Our trading network has expanded to over 100 countries worldwide, a testament to our enduring commitment to quality and innovation. This vast network is built upon the foundation laid by the founder of Sunbeam Manufacturing, Mr. Yu Kan Hing.
We extend our heartfelt appreciation to The Industrial History of Hong Kong Group for their invaluable assistance in analyzing and collecting the material. Their efforts have provided a better understanding of the rich legacy of Hong Kong manufacturing brands.

The Key Knowledge and Know-How Experienced by the Founder: Mr. Yu Kan Hing
Mr. Yu’s journey began at the age of 18 when he left his home for Hong Kong. He started working as an apprentice for a Gold Mountain firm, which specialized in trading with Chinese Americans. In 1905, he co-founded the department store True Light Co (真光公司) with friends, including Chinese Christian merchants associated with Sincere. By 1910, they had established a branch in Canton. Mr. Yu’s quest for knowledge took him on an 11-month round-the-world trip in 1920, where he learned about the latest developments in various countries, including Shanghai, Japan, the US, UK, France, Belgium, Holland, Switzerland, Italy, Egypt, and Singapore. Upon his return, he founded Lepack Co Ltd (利百洋行), engaging in import and export trade.

Sunbeam Manufacturing: The Origin of Sunnex Production
In 1929, Mr. Yu ventured into manufacturing and established Sunbeam, producing flashlights and batteries. These products quickly gained popularity for their quality and affordability, rivaling imported goods. The promising start of Sunbeam Manufacturing was disrupted by the Japanese occupation of Hong Kong in 1938. The company’s plant was looted, with losses in metallic materials alone valued at over HK$260,000. Despite this setback, Sunbeam did not lose its resolve.

Post-War Recovery and Expansion
Sunbeam resumed operations in Hong Kong in 1946 with the support of 250 workers and financial backing from the Bank of East Asia and the Bank of Canton. The strong export markets in Dutch East Indies, Philippines, South Africa, Australia, South America, and Europe fueled Sunbeam’s recovery. By then, Sunbeam was producing 10,000 dozen torchlights, 20,000 dozen batteries, and 2,000 dozen bicycle lamps monthly. Branches were established in Shanghai, Singapore, and Malaysia, and the company achieved an annual revenue run rate of over HK$1 million. An engineering and design department was also established, although customers in Africa and Asia were less keen on design modifications.
